Deborah Uhde is a Berlin based artist and film editor. In her multimedia works, she examines the structures of human existence and combines them with biographical elements.
Summary
Approach
In 2022 we co-created the experimental editorial design for the exhibition catalogue of her exhibition White Slices Blind Spots - Joint Maelstroem of the War.
This book breaks with conventional reading habits: Even the entrance is open - where is the beginning? Where is the end? It can be read in both directions and demands to be turned in the middle. With no end in sight, the path leads ever deeper into a vortex. The handling thus picks up on the subtitle, in which the Maelstroem is used as a metaphor.
Concept
The book is more than just a catalogue: It documents the installation, objects and film scenes from an exhibition, translating them into the media form of a book. Every turn of the page opens up a new dimension, and no two pages are the same - every turn is like entering a new world that is waiting to be discovered.
Result
This creates an analogy in the interaction with this book as an object - on the one hand to the exhibition, on the other hand to its subject, in which the artist deals with artefacts of her grandfather as a Wehrmacht soldier.
